Cryolipolysis is based on a long-known principle : fatty tissue is more sensitive than other tissues to exposure to cold temperatures.
Studies carried out at the renowned Wellmann Institute in Boston, have resulted in the development of a tool which, without the slightest pain, allows lipolysis to be confined to specific zones (e.g. love handles, rounded belly) leading to the progressive loss of about 30% of the thickness of fatty tissue.
CRYOLIPOLYSIS DEVICES
Several devices exist :
– Coolsculpting Zeltiq.
– Cryolipolyse Zimmer.
– Cryolipolyse LipoContrast.
– Cryolipolyse Cristal.
– Cryolipolyse CoolTech.
The device must have the following characteristics:
– CE mark.
– Successful clinical studies must have been conducted on the machine.
– The temperature must be able to go down to a minimum of at least 5°C.
– The pressure must be able to go down by at least 300mb.
– To be effective at the right settings, the treatment must last at least 60 minutes.
– The skin must be protected by a film.
– Following the session, the patient must be massaged for several minutes for the treatment to have a uniform effect.
Lipocontrast machines work slightly differently: after the suction phase of the fatty area, the tool starts by heating the flesh, followed by a phase of brisk cooling.

SESSION
First of all, the doctor uses a wipe to apply a protective gel to the zone to be treated.
The hand piece is applied to the area to be treated. The fatty mass is positioned using suction and the cooling process starts.
The cooling lasts about 60 minutes. You can read, listen to music or simply rest during this time.
As soon as the session is over, and the hand pieces removed, the doctor or the assistant will massage the treated area for ten minutes.
During the session, you might feel ‘traction’ or pulling, and the skin being pinched during the placement of the hand pieces. Some soreness might arise after several minutes of cooling. You can go back to your normal activities straight after the session.
After the session it needs:
– Keep well hydrated ( drink 8-10 glasses of water per day ).
– Follow a healthy lifestyle, including a balanced diet, and daily exercise ( with a minimum 30 minutes walking per day ).
– Avoid consuming coffee and alcohol during the process of lymphatic drainage.
– Carry on with treatments which encourage lymphatic drainage such as massage and anti-cellulite creams.

Side effects and results
Side effects are rare and disappear between three and five days. This is erythema, bruising, transient hypoaesthesia, slight hyperesthesia.
The results are not immediately visible because the fat cells need time to be gradually eliminated by the immune system.
You will begin to see results after 4 to 6 weeks, but your body will still be eliminating fat cells up until 3 to 4 months after the treatment.
One session can lead to about a 30% reduction in thickness of the fatty tissue.
Contrary to invasive techniques, like liposuction, cryolipolysis is totally non-invasive, without any danger to the patient, nor secondary effects. Importantly, there is no scar, nor general anaesthetic, nor recovery time.
